Related Stories Zendaya Sets ‘Dune 3’ Oscar Campaign for Best Actress in Category Shake-Up (EXCLUSIVE) ‘Dune 3’ Popcorn Bucket Has Two Sandworms That ‘Make It Easier to Share’ Comedian Nathan Fielder and “Primetime” filmmaker Lance Oppenheim quietly worked on the movie for more than three years, which offers an unhinged look at the Theranos founder a month before she began an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors. In addition to being eligible for best documentary feature at the 99th Academy Awards, the film will also be submitted across the board as seen on A24’s awards site: best picture, director, production design, cinematography, costume design, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, sound and original score.
Just behind the doc, on it’s second Friday, “Clayface” landed at No. 2, making $3.3 million from 3478 North American theaters in.
The gory DC film has made $36.9 million domestically so far. Rival estimates suggest the film will gross another $10.25 million by Sunday.
Directed by James Watkins, “Clayface” follows the titular Batman villain, a rising movie star also known as Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), who volunteers for a highly experimental medical procedure after his face is severely disfigured. Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan also star.
Variety’s Guy Lodge called the film “its own ugly animal; perhaps the characters and conflicts introduced here would pall if given the franchise treatment, but in the context of a single, genre-melding romp, they’re fresh and ickily enjoyable.” Laika’s “ Wildwood ” landed in third place on Friday, grossing $2.39 million from 2,900 North American theaters. Featuring a voice cast that includes Carey Mulligan, Jacob Tremblay and others, the stop-motion film looks to add another $7 to $8 million to its cumulative domestic gross of $25.2 million through its second weekend in theaters.
Directed by Travis Knight, “Wildwood” revolves around a teenage girl who travels with a classmate into an enchanted forest after her brother is abducted. Strong reviews should continue to propel the lavish film at the box office, which carries a substantial $100 million price tag.
Black Bear’s “ Wicker ” followed with $1.43 million in its second Friday from 2,374 North American theaters, landing in fifth place behind the concert film “BTS World Tour ‘ARIRANG’ in South America,” which brought in $2 million from 1,010 North American theaters.
