The film, aimed as a backdoor pilot for a new “Star Trek” television series, was funded through crowdsourcing. Popular on Variety The Chekov character was not included in “Star Trek: The Animated Series” in the early ’70s because of the show’s limited budget, but Koenig penned an episode of the series entitled “The Infinite Vulcan.” Koenig’s Chekov was central to the plot of 1982’s “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” and consequently the actor enjoyed considerable screen time in the film, generally considered the best of the “Star Trek” movies.

Koenig was also associated with another sci-fi franchise, J. Michael Straczynski’s “ Babylon 5 ,” in which he played the evil Psi Cop Alfred Bester (named by the show’s creators after the science fiction writer).

He appeared in 12 episodes of that show from 1994-98. Walter Marvin Koenig was born in Chicago.

The family of Russian Jewish heritage was originally named Koenigsberg, and he attended Fieldston High School in Fieldston, N.Y., where he did some stage work, before starting at Grinnell College in Iowa, where he was initially pre-med; he transferred to and graduated from UCLA with a degree in psychology. After a professor urged him to pursue a career in acting, he began studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York; there his classmates included Christopher Lloyd, with whom he would be reunited on “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,” in which Lloyd played the villainous Klingon Commander Kruge, as well as James Caan and Dabney Coleman.

Koenig made his smallscreen debut with an uncredited role in an episode of “Combat!” in 1962, followed by guest starring roles on “The Untouchables,” “General Hospital,” “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” “Ben Casey,” “Gidget” and “I Spy.” After the original “Star Trek” series went off the air in 1969, he worked occasionally in TV, guesting on “The Virginian,” “Ironside” and “Columbo” (in an episode that had William Shatner as the special guest star). He played a deputy sheriff in an unremarkable low-budget film called “Nightmare Honeymoon,” starring Dack Rambo.

During the 1980s, when he was busy with the “Star Trek” movies, he appeared as Pompey in a 1983 TV adaptation of “Antony & Cleopatra” that also featured Nichelle Nichols and future “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” captain James A
