It’s now the highest-grossing installment in the 24-year-old horror franchise, toppling 2016’s “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” with $312 million globally. And it ranks as Cregger’s biggest film to date, ranking above 2022’s low-budget success “Barbarian” with $46 million and 2025’s sleeper hit “Weapons” with a mighty $270 million worldwide.

That distinction previously belonged to 2010’s “Resident Evil: Afterlife” with $26 million, not adjusted for inflation.
Buoyed by great reviews and positive audience scores, the movie remained a draw throughout October, a prime time for scary movies. Top overseas markets include China with $71.4 million, the United Kingdom with $19.4 million and Mexico with $12.7 million.
Cregger’s take on the material — “Weapons” actor Austin Abrams plays a medical courier who fights through a viral outbreak of infested monsters in Raccoon City — comes five years after the studio last attempted to revive the property. That effort, 2021’s “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,” was a critical and commercial failure with $42 million worldwide against a $25 million budget.
The Capcom video game was first adapted for the big screen in 2002’s “Resident Evil,” starring Milla Jovovich. She reprised her role as Alice, a former security specialist and covert operative, in five follow-up films in the 2000s and 2010s.
Sony produced this version of “Resident Evil” for $75 million, so the sci-fi horror film will turn a tidy profit for the studio. Sony followed up this win, and the summer’s sensation “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (the third-biggest movie ever with $2.5 billion) with back-to-back duds.
Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning” left theaters with a paltry $9 million in North America and $17 million globally against a $30 million budget, while Taika Waititi’s literary adaptation “Klara and Sun” has barely cracked $1 million domestically against a $20 million budget.
